Sign of the Times: Under the Spell of Old Restaurants, New York Times T Magazine
An essay in the Times waxes nostalgic about the charm of old—truly old—restaurants and offers a space online for readers to add their own favorites. Personally, I was totally charmed by Galatoire's in New Orleans where longtime regulars claim their own waiter and it's not unusual for a guest to get up to lead patrons in song. I was there at an election time and a guest got up and said "let's forget about all these Republicans and Democrats and just sing God Bless America." And I'm willing to wait in a long line for the crab Louis at Swan Oyster Depot in San Francisco. —B.S.
