A Trotter Tribute

Beverly Stephen - July 10th, 2014

The James Beard Foundation hosted a kick-off party Tuesday night at New York City’s Langham Hotel, announcing a fall fund-raising gala in honor of Charlie Trotter, who passed away last year. The gala will be held November 14 at The Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan. Some of Trotter’s closest friends and protégés will prepare the meal, including Norman Van Aken, Emeril Lagasse, Mindy Segal, Michelle Gayer, Carrie Nahabedian, Guillermo Tellez, and Tetsuya Wakuda.

A Charlie Trotter memorial scholarship of up to $10,000 per year was also announced as part of next year’s Beard Foundation scholarship program. Applications will be available starting April 1, 2015, and must be postmarked by May 15, 2015. The recipient will be announced in August 2015.

“Not only was Charlie Trotter a legendary chef and restaurateur, but he won nine James Beard awards,” noted foundation president Susan Ungaro.

Reception hors d’oeuvres were prepared by Langham Hotel chefs David Vandenabeele (New York City) and Tim Graham (Chicago), taking inspiration for some from Trotter’s recipes. Outstanding was a bleeding heart radish ravioli filled with cashew cheese over yellow tomatoes. An auction item at the gala will feature a four night stay at the Langham Chicago, plus a market visit with Graham followed by a chef’s dinner.
